The original McMillan Park gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. Olmsted Jr. was part of the Olmsted Firm found by Frederick Law Olmsted Sr., the "father of American landscape architecture," having designed New York’s Central Park, the U.S. Capitol grounds, Stanford University, and the country's oldest state park, the Niagara Reservation in Niagara Falls. DC residents enjoyed access to McMillan Park until WWII. In 1985, the slow sand filtration plant at McMillan was replaced with a chemical treatment plant.
The District is attempting to develop the Site for the third time. As part of that effort, the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) considers the master plan and design guidelines for the proposed McMillan development on Thursday, May 24 at 10:00 A.M., 441 4th St. NW, Room 220 South. This HPRB hearing is open to the public; written comments must be received by the 16th. Send those to Steve Callcott, steve.callcott@dc.gov, (202) 741-5247.
Come see this wonder before the bulldozers arrive. Come see, photograph, and enjoy this uniquely historic site! Then make your voice heard.
